A Brief History of Tron
By Frank McGavin
Tron (Original) is a Disney classic made in 1982. A young Jeff Bridges stars in this Sci-fi cult classic, where you feel like you’re teleported into the wide world of electronics, video games and computers. Tron was made popular because it was one of the first feature length films from a major movie studio that primarily featured animation and computer graphics. That and it was sweet.
Suddenly 29 years later, a new surge of Tron fever has hit, as new technology, video games, and 3D imaging has made this alternate world of Tron nearly touchable. The 2 minute plot of Tron stars a software engineer who works for the corporation (nearly called Enron GASP!), creating video games for the company, hoping to one day start his own game company. Antagonist Ed Dillinger (David Warner) is an up-n-coming software designer and works his way up the sleazy corporate ladder with gray practices, meanwhile ushering Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) to the dark world of greasy joysticks, pizza, and big gulps.
Skipping forward an hour and a half, Dillinger, has aspirations to break into the Pentagon and take over the world with his computer program that was marginally smarter than humans (hey, that’s all we knew back then!). Eventually they are “forced” to go into the game to play it head to head. Flynn shortly after discovers he can defy the laws of gravity in the game world soon starts to have amazing godly powers, and makes the movie awesome. Fight scenes, racing bikes, and cheesy graphics make this movie a sure snoozer for girlfriends, but a hoot for men. I’m not going to give away the ending in case someone actually feels like brushing up on their Tron knowledge before Legacy comes out, but this is a quick rundown in case you feel like you will be lost for the new Tron.
